About me

Who am I?

Hi! I'm Anka. I was born in The Hague, but have lived in Zoetermeer all my life. In addition to being an over-enthusiastic breakfast fan and exercising because I'm allowed 😉, I am a real bon vivant who loves painting, photography, long dining and cooking.

Fun fact: Mythical creatures. The anka is described in Arabic myths as a huge bird that has the strength to lift even an elephant. Like the Phoenix, it has a long lifespan.

It's between your ears

After my son was born, I suffered from the debilitating symptoms of endometriosis for years. Every month I was confronted with:

Intense (menstrual) pain ("I couldn't do anything, not even do laundry; I was floored by the spastic stitches in my abdomen and lower back"). A bloated stomach ("people sometimes asked me if I was pregnant"). Fatigue ( "I didn't feel like doing anything, just wanted to lie in bed and hope the pain would go away."

Emotional and social stress💔

I didn't feel like a good mother, not a good partner, not a good daughter, not a good friend. I didn't want to make any appointments or plan anything because I was afraid I would have to cancel for the umpteenth time. At one point it seemed like I didn't deserve to let my hair down and just enjoy my life.

Work stress

I have had to call in sick many times and have sometimes continued working against my better judgement. The biggest problem was that I was not understood and felt like a big loser because I was 'ouch' because of my period.

For years I spent my monthly period in bed, in constant pain and bleeding. Despite the many painkillers that my doctor at the time prescribed, nothing seemed to help.

After keyhole surgery, it turned out that I also had a fibroid in the middle of my uterus and that my ovaries were not functioning. I felt defeated!

Phrases like 'It's all in your head' or 'This is part of being a woman' made me doubt myself. At one point I was even recommended to have a hysterectomy. In other words: get everything out of it. F*ck that! That went too far for me!

Finding solutions

I then decided to shift my focus to finding solutions. So I started researching alternative treatment methods, taking supplements and consulting specialists. This is how I learned about the importance of nutrition, exercise and stress management in managing my symptoms.

With the support of my loved ones and my determination to get better, I slowly but surely started to see improvement. I adjusted my diet, started exercising regularly and took time to relax and meditate. This is how I also discovered the power of positive affirmations and visualization techniques to heal my mind and body.

Over time, I noticed my symptoms subsiding and I felt stronger and more resilient than ever before. I realized that I have the power to live my life on my own terms, despite the challenges I faced. My endometriosis hasn't gone away, but I can deal with it. I believe that by sharing my journey and offering support to others, it can positively impact the lives of those struggling with this condition.
